Frequently Asked Questions

Current answers about accounts, voyages, crew, logbook entries, subscriptions and activity notifications.

What is SeaMiles?
SeaMiles is a digital sailing logbook and shared sailing-history platform. A voyage can contain vessel details, skipper, crew, route legs, logbook entries, nautical miles and onboard roles. When people on the same voyage have SeaMiles accounts, the shared voyage contributes to their connected sailing history.
What is the difference between Viewer and Creator?
Viewer is free and lets you access voyages connected to you as crew and keep your sailing history attached to your account. Creator adds the ability to create and manage voyages, crew records, route/logbook information and certificates. New Creator subscriptions currently include a 14-day free trial, followed by €4.99/month unless cancelled.
Do I need a paid subscription to appear on someone else's voyage?
No. A Viewer account is sufficient. A Creator can add you as crew and your voyage history can be linked to your Viewer account.
How does SeaMiles identify crew members?
Each crew record has a stable internal SeaMiles identity. An email address is optional for a crew record, but when an email is present it is used to match the crew record with an existing SeaMiles account and to send invitations. Historical crew names stay part of the voyage record even when the linked account later changes its profile name.
Why should an invitation be accepted with the same email address?
The invitation email is the account-matching key. Using the same email prevents a voyage or crew record from being linked to the wrong person. If the invitation was sent to the wrong address, ask the Creator managing the crew record to correct it and resend the invitation.
Can I add a crew member without an email address?
Yes. Crew members can be recorded without a SeaMiles account or email address. They can still be selected as crew or skipper. An email is needed later if the person should be invited or linked to a SeaMiles account.
Who owns a voyage?
The user who creates a voyage remains the voyage owner. Crew participation does not transfer ownership. The owner can optionally allow Creator crew members who are actually part of the voyage to edit or delete that voyage.
Who can be the skipper?
The skipper is selected from the voyage crew. The skipper does not need a SeaMiles account. SeaMiles keeps one canonical skipper for the voyage, separate from the user who created the voyage.
How do route legs and nautical miles work?
A voyage can contain multiple route legs. Leg distances are optional. You can either enter the total voyage distance manually or let SeaMiles calculate the total from the leg distances you entered.
How do shared GPS tracks work?
A completed GPS recording can be deliberately shared with a saved route leg by an authorized Creator. If several sailors record the same leg, every recording remains separate with its own author and track ID. The SeaMiles app can manage the recordings and select one primary track for that leg. The web view shows shared recordings and allows permitted recordings to be deleted.
Which GPS miles count when several people recorded the same leg?
Only the selected primary track for each route leg contributes to the separate Shared GPS distance. Additional recordings remain available for comparison but do not add duplicate miles. The Shared GPS distance is shown separately and does not automatically replace manually entered or route-leg voyage miles.
Can other crew members see me live while I am sailing?
No. The current shared-track feature is not live tracking. It shares only a completed recording after the recording sailor deliberately uploads it to a voyage leg. GPS pauses and recording gaps remain separate segments, and SeaMiles GPS tracks are for documentation only, not navigation.
What is the smart logbook entry?
The logbook entry captures time and, when browser permissions and device data allow it, position, course and speed. You can also record wind direction, wind strength, weather, sea state, propulsion, sails and an event/note. Entries can be general or attached to a route leg. Browser GPS values may be unavailable or incomplete and SeaMiles is not a navigation system.
Can I add a logbook entry after a voyage has already been saved?
Yes. Open the voyage and choose Add logbook entry. If you have edit permission, SeaMiles can append the entry without rebuilding the whole voyage form.
What are onboard roles?
After a voyage is saved, authorized users can assign onboard roles to crew members. The skipper comes from the voyage's canonical skipper selection. Other crew members are at least recorded as Crew and may receive additional functions for documentation and certificates.
How do SeaMiles certificates work?
From a voyage detail page, an authorized Creator can select a crew member with an assigned onboard role and create a SeaMiles certificate PDF. Where applicable, the skipper signature can be added in the certificate workflow.
What is “Since your last visit”?
After login, SeaMiles can show a summary of relevant new activity, for example when you were added to a voyage, assigned as skipper, when a voyage you sailed on was updated, and aggregate activity from sailors you have sailed with and from SeaMiles overall. The window is shown only when there is relevant activity.
What activity emails can I receive?
In SeaMiles Account → Activity emails you can choose a weekly summary, daily summary or switch digest emails off. You can separately enable or disable immediate emails when you are added to a voyage or assigned as skipper.
Can I upgrade from Viewer to Creator without creating a new account?
Yes. Upgrade from your existing account. Your connected sailing history remains attached to the same SeaMiles identity.
How does the 14-day Creator trial work?
A new Creator subscription includes a 14-day free trial. No Creator subscription fee is charged during the trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription becomes €4.99/month. Mandatory statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.
How can I cancel or keep my Creator subscription?
Open SeaMiles Account → Subscription. During the free trial, cancellation prevents the first Creator subscription charge and Creator access remains available until the trial ends. For a paid subscription, cancellation is scheduled for the end of the current paid billing period. If cancellation is scheduled, Keep Creator subscription can withdraw it before the relevant period ends.
What happens to my sailing history if Creator ends?
The account continues as Viewer. Existing sailing history is not deleted merely because the Creator trial or subscription ends.
What can I change in SeaMiles Account?
You can update your name, optional nautical qualification and radio certificate number, change your password, manage the Creator subscription, choose activity-email preferences and send a service request to SeaMiles Support. Your account email is the SeaMiles account key and currently requires Support if it needs to be changed.
Does SeaMiles use tracking or advertising cookies?
SeaMiles does not use advertising or analytics trackers in the current application. The browser's local storage is used for the authentication token required to keep you signed in. See the Privacy page for the current privacy information.
Is SeaMiles a navigation system?
No. SeaMiles is a documentation and record-keeping service. Position, course, speed, weather and logbook information may be incomplete, delayed or unavailable and must not be relied on for navigation, collision avoidance, voyage planning or emergency decisions.
Where can I find the full user handbook?
Open the SeaMiles User Handbook for step-by-step instructions covering registration, crew, voyages, route legs, logbook entries, certificates, activity summaries and subscriptions.
How do I contact SeaMiles Support?
Use the Support form on the SeaMiles homepage or in SeaMiles Account, or email support@seamiles.one.
Can SeaMiles combine recordings from several crew members?
Yes. The iPhone app can combine suitable local or shared recordings for the same route leg. Original recordings remain unchanged. The web application does not provide merge controls.
What does the MOB button store?
The MOB function stores an independent event with the activation time and, when available, the GPS position, accuracy, course over ground and speed over ground at that moment. It is not added to sailing distance and is not changed by later track edits.
