2. Data we process
- Account data such as name, email address, account status and password hash.
- Sailing data entered into SeaMiles, including trips, vessels, crew assignments, positions, notes and certificates.
- Technical data required to operate and secure the service, such as server logs, IP address, timestamps and error information.
- Support messages and the contact details submitted with them.
- Subscription identifiers and payment status. Payment card details are processed by Stripe and are not stored by SeaMiles.
3. Purposes
We use this data to create and authenticate accounts, provide SeaMiles features, associate crew with voyages, process subscriptions, answer support requests, maintain security and operate the service.
3a. Shared GPS recordings
When an authorized Creator deliberately shares a completed GPS recording with a voyage leg, SeaMiles stores precise positions, timestamps, accuracy and, where recorded, course and speed. The recording is linked to the authenticated account that uploaded it. Other users who are authorized to view that voyage can see the shared recording. The current feature does not provide public or live location tracking.
If several sailors share recordings for the same leg, each recording remains separate. A voyage editor may select one primary track for the leg; this selection affects the Shared GPS distance only and does not overwrite the normal voyage distance.
4. Cookies and local storage
SeaMiles does not use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. SeaMiles uses the browser's local storage to store the authentication token required to keep users signed in. This storage is necessary for the operation of the logged-in service. When you use Stripe Checkout, Stripe may use its own technically necessary storage technologies on Stripe-operated pages.
5. Service providers
SeaMiles uses hosting and email infrastructure to operate the service and Stripe to process paid subscriptions. These providers may process data on our behalf or as independent controllers where required by their services.
3b. Merged GPS routes
Authorized voyage editors may create a derived route from two to ten completed shared GPS recordings of the same route leg. The original recordings remain unchanged. SeaMiles stores the resulting geometry together with the source track identifiers and derivation metadata so the origin of the merged route remains auditable even if a source recording is later deleted.
3c. MOB events
When a user deliberately activates the Man Overboard (MOB) function, SeaMiles may store the activation time and, when available, a snapshot of the GPS position, accuracy, course over ground and speed over ground. MOB events are stored separately from shared tracks and are visible only to users who are authorized to view the voyage. A later track change, primary-track selection or track deletion does not silently alter the stored MOB snapshot.
6. Retention
Account and sailing data is retained while the account is active and as necessary for the service, legal obligations, dispute handling and security. Shared GPS recordings are retained with the voyage history. Removing a route leg does not silently delete its recording; the recording is retained as archived voyage history and loses any primary-track selection. Deleting the voyage deletes its shared GPS recordings. Privacy or deletion requests that require individual review can be sent to Support and remain subject to applicable legal retention requirements. Support and technical records are retained only as long as reasonably necessary for those purposes.
7. Your rights
Subject to applicable data-protection law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or receive your personal data and to object to certain processing. Requests can be sent to support@seamiles.one.
8. Security
SeaMiles uses technical and organisational safeguards intended to protect personal data. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.
9. Changes
This policy may be updated when SeaMiles features, providers or legal requirements change. The current version is published on this page.
